If you've hit Rosebud's weekly AI limit, or you'd rather not pay now that its free plan is gone, here's what the alternatives give you, app by app.
What changed at Rosebud
Rosebud retired its free plan on 30 September 2026, saying its upgraded app, with a new memory system, takes significantly more resources to run. The app now starts with a free trial, then a paid plan. Your entries stay, and you can export everything anytime.
Every paid plan comes with an AI usage limit that resets weekly, and unused usage doesn't carry over. Entry reflections, Dig Deeper conversations, voice transcription, read-aloud, weekly reports and Ask Rosebud all count toward it. At the limit you can still finish an entry and get its reflection, but Dig Deeper is blocked until the reset. The Thrive 2x and Thrive 5x plans raise the limit.
It's still a polished app with good voice journaling and memory, so this page is for when you'd rather not pay, or not watch a meter.
What's actually free in each app
Loop Mind is our app. It's in the table where it fits, not at the top.
| App | What's free | Best for |
| Rosebud (for reference) | A free trial, then paid only, with a weekly AI limit on every plan | Voice journaling and memory, if you'll pay |
| Reflection | Free forever, with no cap on entries, plus an AI coach with a daily cap | AI replies without paying |
| Dayora | A generous free plan with AI replies and voice (web only) | AI replies, if you write in a browser |
| Day One | A basic journal; AI features need the Gold plan (one-month trial) | A long-term home for your entries |
| Stoic | Journaling and prompts; AI is a paid tier | Prompts to get you writing |
| Mindsera | A journal without AI; AI is on the paid plan | Writing first, AI later if you want it |
| Apple Journal | Free and built into iOS; no AI reflection | No AI, nothing to install |
| How We Feel | Free, from a nonprofit | Quick emotion check-ins, not long entries |
| ChatGPT (do it yourself) | Projects and memory; no dated record or pattern view; the US free and Go plans have shown ads since February 2026 | A homemade setup, if ads don't bother you |
| Loop Mind (ours) | Free to start, with a daily limit: check in by voice or text and get an AI reflection on every entry that separates facts from assumptions | People who overthink and want to see their patterns |
Free plans checked on the US App Store on 16 October 2026. Rosebud's usage limits checked on its help pages on 17 October 2026.
How to choose, by what you actually need
- You keep hitting a weekly limit. Loop Mind (ours) has no weekly limits. Clarity, the paid plan, only has high caps that are there to prevent abuse. Rosebud's Thrive plans raise its weekly limit instead.
- You want something that replies. Reflection is free with a daily cap on its AI coach. Dayora gives away AI replies and voice, if a browser works for you.
- You want privacy and no AI. Apple Journal is already on your iPhone and has no AI reflection; Day One's basic journal and Mindsera's free plan skip the AI too. Check how each one stores entries before you write anything sensitive.
- You want mood tracking. How We Feel is free, made by a nonprofit, and built for quick emotion check-ins.
- You want to see your thinking patterns. That's what Loop Mind (ours) is built for. Rosebud's paid plan also has weekly insights, if you decide to stay.
Why people who overthink use Loop Mind
- Voice or text. Talk it out on the walk home or type it in bed, as messy as it comes out.
- Fact vs assumption. Each check-in is reflected back with what you actually know split from what you're assuming.
- See your loops over the months. Every entry shows which of seven loops it's in (the inner critic, what-ifs, replaying the past, relationships, decisions, body and health, big questions), and Clarity, the paid plan, shows which ones you lean on over the months.
Questions people ask
Does Rosebud have weekly limits?
Yes. Every paid plan has an AI usage limit that resets weekly, and unused usage doesn't carry over. At the limit you can still finish an entry and get its reflection, but Dig Deeper is blocked until the reset. Thrive 2x and Thrive 5x raise the limit.
Is Rosebud still free?
No. Rosebud retired its free plan on 30 September 2026, and the app now starts with a free trial before a paid plan.
Why did Rosebud end its free plan?
Rosebud says its upgraded app, including a new memory system, takes significantly more resources to run, so it can't sustainably keep a free tier.
What happens to my Rosebud entries?
Rosebud says nothing you've written is going away and you can export everything anytime. Former free users are pointed to a special offer inside the app.
Is there an AI journal with no weekly limits?
Loop Mind (ours) has none. It's free to start, with a daily limit you'll see in the app, and Clarity, the paid plan, has no weekly limits either, only high caps that are there to prevent abuse. Not every app publishes its AI limits, so check before you pay.
What's the best free AI journal?
It depends what you want back. Reflection (with a daily cap) and Dayora (web only) both include AI replies on their free plans. If you overthink and want to see your patterns, Loop Mind (ours) is free to start, with an AI reflection on every entry.
Can I use ChatGPT as a journal?
Yes, with free Projects and memory. You won't get a dated record of entries or a view of your patterns over time, and in the US the free and Go plans have shown ads since February 2026.
